In Japan, rabbits—known as usagi—have long been cherished as symbols of good fortune, growth, and gentle strength. Their presence in folklore and daily life is deeply connected to nature, agriculture, and the quiet rhythms of the moon.
One of the most beloved stories is the legend of the Moon Rabbit (Tsuki no Usagi). While other cultures see a man on the moon, Japanese tradition sees a rabbit pounding rice cakes (mochi). This tale comes from Buddhist teachings, where the rabbit selflessly offers itself to help a hungry traveler, who later reveals himself as a deity. Moved by the rabbit’s compassion, the gods place its image on the moon as an eternal symbol of kindness and selflessness.
