In Japan, owls—known as fukuro—have long been treasured as symbols of wisdom, protection, and good fortune. Their name carries a beautiful wordplay: fu (不) meaning “no” and kurō (苦労) meaning “hardship,” giving the meaning “a life without suffering.” Because of this, owl motifs became popular talismans believed to bring smooth days and protect against difficulties.
Traditionally, owls were admired for their ability to see clearly in the dark. This trait led people to believe that owls could guide them through uncertainty, helping them find the right path when answers were not easily seen. In rural Japan, owls were also respected as protectors of crops, as they kept harmful pests away, further strengthening their role as guardians of the household and land.
